Painting of pub life

Following on from recent work, this study of pub life tries to capture what seems to be a declining subject.

I love the way pubs can be lively and cosy, with all sorts of charcters and interactions. It’s much more a representation of traditional pub life. It’s crowded. The lighting is dim and I tried to hint at the noise and bustle.

The Guvn’r

One of  another series. This time the subject is ‘The Pub’, so, where better to start than with the pub landlord, mine host, ‘The Guvn’r’.

As much as anything I wanted to capture the cosy, friendly atmosphere of of a social place that’s in danger of disappearing. At its heart heart is the landlord – inn keeper of the public house, around which everything happens.

The lighting is warm and golden rather than the fluorescent glow of the modern designer establishment.

The Plongeur

A series painting: this is the third of four.

We’re following the roles of characters involved in the process of restaurant business. The first of the series showed The Chef running the busy kitchen – The Waiter captured his bubble of professional calm in a hectic service session.

‘The Plongeur’ depicts the person least seen, dealing with the used plates, dishes, pots and pans.

The Chef

A series painting, the first of four.

I’ve always been fascinated by the hospitality trade, particularly restaurants. I wanted to capture the bustle and organised chaos of a busy kitchen. The focus of course is the chef – a combination of leader, mentor, director and – when necessary – dictator.

This led me to embark upon a series of links in the chain:

‘Smart as paint’

A spontaneous creation. A lot of images that resonate with me for another creation of one of my ‘heads’. Full of naval signifiers from the matelot with his full-set and the signal flags and the title.

‘If it moves salute it – if it doesn’t, paint it’.

So I painted it.
